Over the last couple of years, the sales of digital photo frames have increased dramatically. They were one of the most popular gifts last Christmas. In the course of 2008 there were significant price cuts – in the first instance as a result of lower costs of parts and materials and then, later in the year, primarily due to pricing competition amongst the manufacturters. Whilst some of the popularity of these frames is undoubtedly due to keen pricing, that is far from the whole story.

The technical features available are also unlikely to account for the increased popularity of digital frames. Slideshows, background music, remote controls etc. – all good stuff, but not likely to be at, or even near, the top of the list of desired features for your mother or grandmother – who are in the group of people most likely to receive a digital frame as a gift.

Electronic frames are no longer the preserve of early adopters and gadget freaks. They have entered the mainstream consumer items market and are considerably more presentable as a consequence. Earlier models tended to be shiny metallic or black constructions – but it is now possible to get frames with removable surrounds which can be selected to suit the ambient decor in your home. Whilst that would go some way towards improving their mass market appeal, it still doesn’t explain their new found popularity.

The critical factor that makes these frames ideal as gifts is the simple fact that they can be customised and updated in the future – two highly valued features nowadays. A lot of people will take a little time to store a few photos of grandkids, children, recent holidays, family pets etc. on the frame before handing their gift to Granny. They’re not just handing over some high tech gizmo – it’s a personalized collection of memories in that nicely wrapped gift box.

And don’t forget the update options. Following the next holiday, family reunion or anniversary, all you have to do is pass over a memory stick with some new photos on it for a kind of photographic family news bulletin. Many of the new frames even include Wi-Fi – so you can add new photos without the need for a memory card.

Admittedly, we have come full circle back to the technical aspects now. But only since it facilitates the truly important thing – the sharing of shared memories.
