Why It May Be Beneficial To Be A Member Of A Fraternity Or Sorority
With jobs becoming difficult to find, these days, it is important for people to do everything they can while they are in school to make sure they are ready to be hired right after college. One of the things people can do while attending school to help their resume is to become active in Greek life at their college. There are plenty of advantages that come with being involved in a fraternity or sorority as well. For example, one story that is well known at one school is that a man who owned a pi kappa alpha shop helped his fellow fraternity brother get in a touch with someone to do his dental office design when he was starting his new practice. Below is a better idea of the benefits of becoming part of Greek Life:
1. Usually, the most of the people in the Greek organization that you choose have comparable likes and dislikes to you. In fact, there are even some fraternities and sororities that are focused only on the scholastic part or only focused on a specific group of people, like agriculture students. It can be extremely helpful to have people who will probably be in the same classes as you, for study reasons and so you know at least one person in your classes.
2. Having a Greek organization on your resume can be a great assistance when you are looking for jobs. For example, one young lady went to interview for a company and found out that the interviewer’s wife was an alumnus of her sorority, which gave them something unique to talk about and she was offered a job after the interview.
3. In a fraternity or sorority there are numerous types of opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience. In most Greek organizations, you can be the head of a committee, which will most likely not be too difficult or you can become a member of the executive board, which has more responsibility. This is great because you can have some kind of choice in which type of leadership experience you would like to have, if you decide to take part in that aspect of the fraternity.
4. The networking possibilities that come about through a Greek organization are pretty much infinite. Plenty of recent graduates have been able to get jobs right out of college simply by talking to fraternity brothers or sorority sister who have recently graduated or by talking to someone from their alumni group.
As explained above, there are many benefits to becoming involved with a Greek organization while in school. Potential employers really like to see a person who has a lot of leadership experience and someone who is well rounded, both which can be accomplished by joining Greek life because most Greek organizations do many different kinds of activities. Also, you do not have to choose to be in a social fraternity or sorority, since there are different types of Greek organizations that are not considered traditional social Greek organizations, but they are still considered Greek. These have the almost exactly the same benefits as a traditional Greek organization, like a Business Fraternity, for example, which is co-ed and only allow people in who have an interest or major/minor in business.
